TikTok is one of the most popular and engaging social media channels. By running TikTok ads, you too can leverage its massive user base and reach your target audience.
Although I haven’t run many TikTok ads, here are some things that I wish to highlight so you’re more aware as well as mistakes that you should avoid.

1. Placements
When you create an ad group, you can choose placements like
- TikTok
- Global App Bundle: ByteDance’s emerging apps such as CapCut, Fizzo & more
- Pangle: ad network of TikTok for Business so you reach people across non-TikTok apps
Whether you choose automatic placement or manual placement, it’s best that you think through. Because after publishing the ad group, you can’t make changes to the placements. If you decide to add or remove a placement, you’ll have to duplicate the entire campaign, ad groups and ads.

2. Location Targeting
Unlike other channels like Facebook, LinkedIn and YouTube where location targeting is expansive, TikTok location targeting is quite limited.
Depending on where you registered your TikTok Ads Manager account, the available location target options will vary.
To mitigate this, you can always check the list of available locations. However, I prefer checking the TikTok ads platform itself since it’s the most up-to-date.

3. Minimum Budget
Next, be mindful of the minimum budget to run TikTok ads.
TikTok’s minimum budget is higher than Facebook and LinkedIn. Thus, you probably need to allocate more budget for TikTok so ads can run. If you’re running ads for a client, you would have to give them a heads-up so they’re aware and are prepared to fork out a larger budget for TikTok ads.

4. Campaign Budget Optimization
Similar to Meta’s Advantage+ Campaign Budget, TikTok has this Campaign Budget Optimization where it spends your budget smartly. For example, it might spend more budget on 1 or 2 ad groups because they’re predicted to perform better.
For this, it’s better to plan ahead. If you know that you’ll be running a few ad groups and you don’t have a fixed budget for each, it’s better to implement Campaign Budget Optimization so TikTok can optimize performance. If so, you should enable this from the start, during the campaign setup. Once it’s set, you can’t change it. Hence, it’s better if you think about this and choose to turn it on or off according to your needs from the beginning.
