Buyer persona is a crucial element for marketing success. You need to understand your target audience so you can tailor your marketing strategies for maximum results. Thus, when you’re planning a marketing campaign, the first thing you need to do is get your buyer persona right.

Here are some information that you’ll need to create your buyer persona.

[Marketing Tips] 5 Things You Need To Create A Buyer Persona

Buyer Persona

A buyer persona is a semi-fictional representation of your ideal customer, built from market research and customer data.

Buyer persona goes beyond basic demographics like age and gender. It also includes information about their behaviors, goals and pain points.

By creating buyer personas, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of your target audience’s needs and desires which can then inform your marketing strategies.

Now, let’s move on to the key components of a buyer persona. Bear in mind that you can always look at your own customer data and market research to define these key components and create your buyer persona.

1. Name

The first component is naming your buyer persona. If you can tell at a glance what the buyer persona is like, that’s a great name. Likewise, you should be able to differentiate the various buyer personas from the name itself.

Alliteration works well here. With alliteration, you can more easily remember your buyer persona.

Here are some buyer persona names with alliteration: Bookworm Bella, Fashionista Fiona, Technophile Thomas.

2. Demographic: Age, Gender, Education, Income, Location

Next is the demographic information.

  • Age
  • Gender
  • Education Background
  • Income
  • Location

This will paint a big picture of what your buyer persona is like. You can use this information to narrow your targeting.

For instance, if your buyer persona is in their twenties, you can target only people aged 20 to 29 for your marketing campaigns.

3. Career: Industry, Company, Job

Career-related information is another component of the buyer persona.

  • Industry
  • Company Size
  • Job Title
  • Job Responsibilities

Feel free to add on other information that you think will be useful. For example, you might include tools your buyer persona might use to do their job. This is great for LinkedIn ads where you can target years of experience, job function, job seniority, member skills and more.

4. Interests, Hobbies, Behaviors

You can now go slightly below the surface level.

List down interests, hobbies and behaviors that your buyer persona will have. Here are some examples:

  • reading the news and non-fiction books
  • outdoor activities
  • active on Instagram
  • researching the product before making a purchase: blog posts, reviews, testimonials

Based on your market research, you can make an educated guess. For instance, women are likely to be active on Instagram while young people are likely to be active on TikTok. You can also interview your customers to figure out their interests, hobbies and behaviors.

5. Psychographic: Goals, Values, Challenges, Pain Points

Lastly, dive deep into your buyer persona.

  • Goals & Motivations: What are their personal and professional goals?
  • Values & Beliefs: What is important to them?
  • Challenges & Pain Points: What problems or frustrations do they face?

Again, try to make an educated guess based on market research and customer data.

This psychographic information is important because it will guide your messaging angle. To make your copy resonate with your target audience, you need to get this right. When you understand their goals, motivations, values, beliefs, challenges and pain points, you’ll create more personalized and relevant copy that speaks to them.
