What Is CapCut?

CapCut is an all-in-one video editor and graphic design tool. It enables video editing and image design on browsers, Windows, Mac, Android and iOS. Moreover, video editing expertise isn’t required to use this tool.

I recommend that you download the app on your phone so that you can easily edit videos on the go before uploading on TikTok.

In additional to its numerous features, CapCut is also free. This makes it a valuable app that I strongly recommend you to install, especially if you create many videos for your business or organization.

1. Create A Project: Add Your Videos & Images

Let’s start with the basics.

The first thing you should do after installing CapCut is creating a project. So each project is the video that you’ll upload onto TikTok or whatever social media and website.

Speaking from past experience of countless edits before the video is finalized, I recommend that you keep this project and only delete it after you upload the final video on whatever platform. This way, you could always go back and edit the project if you want to make changes to the video. As you know, even FINAL_FINAL_FINAL.mp4 is never final until you upload the video. You could also delete the project when you’re 100% sure that you won’t edit this video anymore.

When creating your project, add the videos and images, basically all the creatives and assets that you need for this video. Do check if the size is correct. But don’t worry, you can still crop them in CapCut (which I’ll show you how later). If your images are small, you can move them up and down. For instance, you can place images in the center to make them the focal point. Or you could move them down and place text at the empty space above to elaborate more.

Also, you can always rearrange your videos and images by tapping and dragging them.

2. Edit Your Videos & Make Them Shine

So initially, I didn’t know about TikTok video specifications and simply used the full size when recording videos on my phone. I later found out that TikTok prefers 9:16 videos and hence, I started recording 9:16 videos. But when I strung these videos together in CapCut, it was obvious that they were different sizes. You can simply crop to the size you want with CapCut. Just click on the video, choose Transform and select Crop.

Also, you can speed up and slow down your videos by clicking on the video and selecting Speed. For images, you lengthen or shorten the duration by dragging the image.

Likewise, you can select the video and click on Reverse to reverse your video and create a backward effect.

There are various filters, transitions and animations that you can apply to your videos too. Filters help change the theme, light, mood, color and vibe of your videos while transitions and animations are great for creating a seamless flow between video clips and hence, enhancing the overall viewing experience.

3. Optimize For Sound Off: Leverage Text

Bear in mind that some people watch videos on mute. Silent viewing is common where people have various reasons for watching videos without sound. They might be commuting, waiting at a clinic or simply, don’t want to wake their sleeping children. Therefore, you should create your videos for this group of audience too.

Text is thus crucial for such videos. Without audio, will your audience be able to understand your video? If they can’t, consider adding text to your videos.

Ensure the text is readable. Meaning that you should use a legible font with sufficient duration. If the text disappears or changes before your audience even finish reading, you won’t get your message across. When you add text in CapCut, you have a range of choices: fonts, styles, effects, animations, bubbles. For fonts, you can choose the same as your brand. Also, consider turning on Auto Captions where CapCut will generate captions automatically.

Bonus Tip: Engage Your Audience With TikTok Stickers

Personally, I feel that CapCut stickers are limited. So I prefer to leave an empty space then upload the edited video onto TikTok and use TikTok stickers instead. I think the greatest edge TikTok has over CapCut is that you can search for stickers (which I feel is really important).

TikTok also has interactive stickers like poll, ask, reply. This is perfect for engaging your audience.

Bonus Tip: Don’t Rely On CapCut Only

As mentioned above, some tools have certain features and are better at certain things than others. But each tool has their own pros and cons.

You might have guessed it: I use both CapCut and TikTok when editing videos.

Likewise, feel free to use both tools (or even more tools) to create the videos you want. What you should focus on is that your needs and standards are met. It doesn’t matter what or how many tools you use as long as you achieve your goals.
