Emoji is crucial when crafting copy for social media channels. Whether it’s Facebook, Instagram or TikTok, emoji makes your copy more friendly and conversational. They also help to express emotions and emphasize key points.
Here are some tips to take into consideration when including emojis in your copy.

1. Humanize Your Brand With Emojis
Including smileys in your copy might seem less professional but it makes your brand more friendly. By expressing emotions in your copy, you humanize your brand and close the distance with your target audience.

2. Use Relevant Emojis To Convey Your Message
Here are some emojis you can consider using based on your industry or the types of products and services you sell
- Animals: π©π±π¬
- Career: πΌπ§βπΌπ§βπ»
- Data: ππ
- Events: ππππ
- Education: ππ§βππ«
- Mental Well-Being: πͺβ€οΈπ«
- Sports: πππ₯
- Sustainability: ππ±
You can be more specific. For example, if you’re selling cooking courses, you could use specific emojis like π§βπ³π₯π
Such emojis are great in telling your target audience at a glance the message that you’re trying to convey.
3. Break Up Chunky Text With Emojis
Emojis are great for breaking up long blocks of text.
When you break up text into smaller paragraphs, you improve content readability and user experience.
There are many ways to do this. For example, using simple and concise language and getting straight to the point. You can also ensure that your paragraphs are short (about 3 to 4 sentences per paragraph).
Another way is using lists to sum up your key messages. βοΈβ β‘οΈ are some emojis that you can use for list while emojis like 1οΈβ£2οΈβ£3οΈβ£ can be used as numbered lists or steps.

4. Place Emojis At The Start Or End Of Sentences
Personally, I prefer to place emojis at the start or end of a sentence. This helps to draw readers’ attention and emphasize this sentence which is probably the most important one in the whole copy. Mid-sentence, on the other hand, feels like a distraction and might disrupt the flow.
The key question to ask yourself is what do you want to emphasize. Look at your entire copy and pick out the words, phrases or sentences that you want to emphasize and place emojis near them.
Also, if I end a sentence with emoji, I usually don’t put a period. Periods signify finality. Therefore, I don’t want readers to stop reading at that sentence due to the period but rather, I want them to continue reading the rest of the copy.
5. Take Note Of Emoji Limit
When crafting copy for your social media ads, do bear in mind that some platforms might have a limit on the number of emojis.
For instance, Facebook and Instagram are quite lax about this. It’s perfectly okay to have more emojis for ad copies on these ad platforms. However, LinkedIn is much stricter about this. So do check the limit and adjust accordingly.
When faced with such limits, you need to prioritize the emojis. I strongly recommend that you keep the emoji that shouts out your call-to-action. Here’s an example: π’ Sign up now!

Bonus Tip: Bold & Italic Text
In addition to emojis, I also love using special characters when writing copy for emphasis.
Some platforms, such as LinkedIn, have formatting like bold and italic. But some platforms like Facebook do not. In such cases, using special characters is a way to draw attention to specific words or phrases.
Here are bold and italic text generators that I always use.
In my case, I tend to bold important information such as the product or service. If you’re promoting an event, you can choose to bold event details like the venue, date and time. I use italics for disclaimers and terms and conditions. But it’s really up to you how you want to use it. Just take note to use it sparingly so only certain words are emphasized.
