Wrote a book and want to dedicate it to your loved ones?

What Is A Book Dedication?

A dedication page is where you dedicate the book to someone or a group of people.

It could be your loved ones like your friends and family. Or it could be your readers who support you.

You can write it as a one-liner or a paragraph. The key is to get your point across.

The language can be formal or informal. It’s really up to you.

1. Directly State Who You’re Dedicating This Book To

First and foremost, be straightforward and spell out who exactly are you dedicating this book to.

It could be your loved ones like your family and friends or your loyal readers who have been supporting you. Of course, you can choose not to disclose full names but instead use first names, nicknames or pet names.

The key is that you send a copy of your book or at least, let these people read the dedication page so they know you’ve dedicated the book to them.

Personally, I prefer getting straight to the point. So I don’t spend too much time or paragraphs before saying who this book is dedicated to.

2. Include Why You’re Dedicating This Book To Him/Her/Them

There must be a reason why you’re dedicating this book to a specific person or group of people.

• Did they help you?
• Did they support you?
• Was the book written with them in mind?
• Are you trying to tell them something?

Shout this out. This is the best place to show your gratitude and how they’ve helped shape who you are (and your book).

But do be concise, especially if you’re dedicating this book to many people or have a long list of reasons. Instead, pick a few key people and summarize the reasons in a few lines.

3. Be You

If you’re dedicating this book to someone you know, you can be yourself.

Whether that’s being humorous or witty, you can stay true to yourself since the person knows you. Or you can even say something special that only the two of you know! Even if readers don’t understand what you’re talking about, they can witness firsthand what your personality is like. This will help build the connection between readers and you, the author.

Also, if you say something relatable like the example below, it’ll resonate with readers and you’ll connect on a deeper emotional level.

4. Hint At The Theme Or Key Message

Dedication page is also a great place to give a clue about your book’s theme and key message. This is where you can shed light on the topics your book will revolve around or the central message that you’re trying to convey.

Unlike previously, you don’t have to be straightforward here. You can choose to be vague—just enticing enough that readers will want to continue reading.

The example below is interesting and relatable to those who actually encounter such a situation. It also hints at the key message of having an extraordinary name—being different, being unique, being you.

5. Be Inspirational

Writing a book itself is a feat. It could even be a lifelong dream for some aspiring writers!

So why not use this chance to encourage people and give them hope?

Positive encouraging words might just be the key to motivate people. Readers will also treasure your book and keep it as a memento of encouragement.

For fiction books, your story might show how hard work pays off or encourage readers to pursue their dreams. A happily ever after romance story could help readers recover from heartbreak and nurse their broken hearts. For non-fiction books, you could give them the courage to make a career switch or convey the message that everyone is a potential leader.
